Children's Initiatives

Among the tens of thousands of beneficiaries we serve annually, at least 40% are children—a key demographic within our client-population. We provide them with organically grown vitamins every month, and host annual eight-week workshops to bring parents/guardians and their children together in an enjoyable, hands-on curriculum that enables kids to (1) assess food value and (2) prepare nutritious meals for themselves.

In summer, we keep at-risk youth off the streets by enrolling them in our basketball team, The River Fund Cobras, and/or our Summer Gardening Program. In winter, at our Gift-Giving Events, we distribute tens of thousands of toys to children whose parents would have to sacrifice food to buy presents. Every January our annual Shoes4Kids Event, held on the national Martin Luther King Weekend of Service provides new shoes to needy children—when the cold weather makes the need most acute. Then there’s our spring Easter-Basket Giveaway, Halloween, Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day Events, and much more.

Thank you for helping us bring meaningful activities to the lives of these children.

RIVER FUND operates as navigators to help families through the maze of more than 140 different anti-poverty programs to find the small handful that specifically matches their unique circumstance. Every family’s situation is different. Every person in the family faces the impact of poverty in a different way. Battling poverty on the frontline involves tackling both individual needs AND supporting the family as a whole.

Since 1991, RIVER FUND has been perfecting the skill of guiding individuals and families from despair and frustration to hope. Our methods work, and we have established one of the most effective models for poverty combat in New York City—from hunger support, to benefits access, and through a unique “cradle to college initiative” to finally break the multi-generational cycle of poverty that has made material hardship the most heartbreaking part of our great City’s reality for more than 50 years.
