During the Holiday Season of 2011, The River Fund distributed almost 10,000 toys to more than 3,000 children at three Xmas Gift-Giving events. For 2012, we set ourselves, as usual, a new target: To increase our 2011 number by about 35%. However, Sandy came along and dramatically expanded our service-footprint in Queens and Brooklyn. Naturally, the majority of the New Yorkers affected by the storm have young children whose lives were completely shaken by the effects of the disaster. We had to find a way to respond meaningfully to that challenge as well. Reaching out in all directions, we attracted support through toy drives in affluent communities, at corporations and media partners. We appealed to foundations that focus on children and we asked for your support. The response was tremendous:—
During the 2012 Christmas Week, we were able to host FIVE Gift-Giving events at which we distributed some 20,000 toys to 7,803 children, and thousands of new sweatshirts, coats and other garments to the families—as well as food, of course, which we always view as the first line of defense in the battle against poverty. To all of you who helped us achieve this amazing result, thank you very much. We could not have done this without your phenomenal support.
For Xmas 2013, the number of kids we gave toys to was smaller (5,347) than our 2012 total; but the range of gifts we were able to provide allowed us to ensure that everyone in our client households got a present! As a result, we shared more than 35,000 gifts to the families and seniors we serve.
If you missed the opportunity to support this immense project, you can still make a difference in the lives of the thousands of needy children we serve, by participating in our Back-to-School Giveaway Program, which seeks to outfit the 2,000 neediest children in our database with backpacks and other essential supplies. Every year, this is one of the most difficult programs for us to fund. Any help you can provide will be highly appreciated. To specifically support that initiative, please click here.

Once again, The River Fund was selected as a partner of the United States Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program. Here, one of our trucks is being loaded at the Marines' base.
