Since 2009, The River Fund New York has been one of only 700 organizations worldwide to have been selected by the Payless Foundation as a partner in their annual Shoes4Kids Program. Through this endeavor, Payless seeks to help needy families provide new shoes for their children when they need them the most: During the winter—at a time when struggling families are usually forced to cope with higher costs and lower incomes. Payless provides $20 vouchers to be distributed to the selected children.
Our Shoes4Kids Event is held at the local Payless ShoeSource in South Richmond Hill, Queens. We always host the project on the Sunday of the Martin Luther King Weekend—which has evolved into a focal period for community service in the United States. Dozens of families flock to the store to get shoes for their children and the excitement is shared by teams of volunteers from various NYC corporations who enjoy advising the children and their parents.
Over time, The River Fund has been able to expand this program to a take care of more children each year. Starting in 2013—just a few months after Hyperstorm Sandy—we have been able to multiply the number of children helped by this program, compared to the impact of previous years; and through specific fundraising efforts, we are able to provide matching funds to ensure that the shoes purchased are completely free to the needy families: Children of all ages are helped—with individual “spending limits” as high as $55.
As valuable as this program is to the community, the impact we are able to make on the need is not significant enough. We are making every effort to expand this program even more—and we thank our committed donors their continued support of this and all of our other children’s initiatives.
